If you have been laid off or terminated from work, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. If eligible, you will not receive your full salary, but you will receive some money while you look for new employment. To receive unemployment benefits in Wisconsin, you need to apply for them with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. You can apply online or by phone.

You Need:

Social Security Number
Personal Identification Number (PIN)
Wisconsin Driver's License, if applicable
Former employers' names, addresses and phone numbers

Create a four-digit PIN number. This number is unique to you and you will need it for all further unemployment-related communications with the Department of Workforce Development.

Open your web browser and go to the Department of Workforce Development's application page ucclaim-wi.org

Click either "First time" or "Filed before" depending on your status.

Read the requirements page, then click "Continue." Click "Need a PIN" on the next page if you have not filed before. Otherwise click "Have PIN."

Type in your Social Security Number twice in the appropriate fields on the next page. If this is your first time, enter your PIN twice. If this is not your first time, you will only be asked to enter it once. Click "File My Claim" to proceed to the application. Answer all application questions truthfully and accurately. You will receive a letter informing you of your eligibility status.

Dial 800-822-5246 from a touch-tone phone.

Press the appropriate numbers in response to the automated response system. You will be asked questions by a recorded voice and asked to select a number for your answer.

Press "1" at the end of the automated call to apply for benefits. When a staff member gets on the line, answer all of her questions to complete the application process.
