How to Stay Healthy This Winter

Winter season, it’s the season for snow balls, snowman, and ice skating and all other exciting outdoor activities. Indoor activities also includes sipping hot chocolate by the fireplace, watching favorite movies under thick comforters and just enjoying the serenity and warmth of our own homes. These are just the several good things about winter. On the other side, there are some negative things that come with this extreme weather condition. Our health condition may deteriorate faster and our immune system weakened. However, there are several ways and tips to stay healthy and to avoid going through winter blues.

1. Wear proper clothing.

Use the correct clothes with the proper materials suitable to this season, the material should allow the sweat to evaporate in order to avoid colds. Clothing is our first external protection in this type of weather. In case you need to go out make sure to wear thick clothing, sweaters, jackets, coats and gloves. Also, make sure you protect your head by using bonnets and ear warmers. Use thick socks and boots to protect your feet as well.

2. Proper food, vitamins and nutrition.

These foods are needed to maintain a healthy body, to strengthen our immune system and to help our system easily ward off infection. Eat lots of citrus foods such as oranges and tangerines.

3. Drink lots of fluid.

Drinking fluids most especially water and fruit juices are important for good health. Good health equals stronger body and immune system. But during winter time it is so nice to have a cup of steaming coffee or tea, make sure you do not overdo it, limit it as it can be harmful to health due to caffeine. This caffeine can draw water out of the body due to frequent urination which can lead to dehydration.

4. Frequent hand washing.

This can easily prevent the spread of infection. Wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet.

5. Cover mouth when sneezing or coughing.

Droplets coming from us when sneezing or coughing can be a way to spread infection, so make sure that you cover your mouth when you do so.

6. Adequate rest and sleep.

Lack of sleep or too much tiredness can weaken our immune system, so make sure that during this season you take time off from work or from school. Have time to relax and have 8 to 10 hours a day of sleep. Isn’t it too nice to cuddle and stay in bed during this season?

7. Regular exercise.

Our body needs more heat during this time and a good way to generate this is by doing exercise. It helps our body stay warm and also makes us healthier. It improves our blood circulation.

8. Take precautionary measures.

These measures include avoiding people who are sick especially with flu. Flu is rampant at this time of the year. Also, make sure that you have stock of first aid medicines such as drugs for fever and flu so that you can easily take it at the first sign of infection to avoid worsening of your condition.
