Unemployment.ohio.gov - Appeal for Unemployment Benefits in Ohio

Upon filing, the agency requests information from your previous employer to substantiate the claim. For numerous reasons, the state of Ohio may deny your unemployment claim resulting in the need to file an appeal. Ohio provides guidance and help for handling each step of your appeal.

File online or by telephone as you normally would. Continue to meet the qualifications and requirements for receiving unemployment benefits in the state of Ohio, such as looking for work and attending mandatory training sessions. Submit a written appeal to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services (ODJFS) by mail, via fax or online. Include your name, Social Security number and determination ID number found on the original determination document. Provide an explanation as to why the initial determination is incorrect and state your case for receiving unemployment benefits. Attach any supporting documentation. File online at unemployment.ohio.gov or mail or fax the appeal documents to the processing center listed on your initial determination letter.

Wait for additional information: Allow ODJFS 21 calendar days from the receipt of your appeal to request and review further information from your employer if they choose to further contest your qualification for unemployment benefits.

Review the redetermination decision: File an appeal related to the redetermination if you still disagree with the findings. Follow the instructions provided on the redetermination form and submit any information supporting why you still disagree with the findings. Use the same format as the initial determination appeal and provide any additional information that could be helpful. Mail to the address listed on the form, fax the form to 614-466-8392 or submit the redetermination appeal online at unemployment.ohio.gov.

File all appeals within 21 calendar days of the date listed on the initial determination or redetermination. Show up for any in-person hearings with hearing officers or make arrangements for a telephone interview. Appeal to the Ohio Unemployment Compensation Review Commission and request further review of the decision reached by the hearing officer during a redetermination appeal. Speak to a lawyer about continuing with any appeals, as this would require filing an appeal with the Court of Common Pleas located in your county. Create a file for all communications and save certified mail receipt, fax receipt confirmations and print screens of any online activity.
